How to Keep Your Pet Safe this Thanksgiving

  • View Larger Image how to keep pets safe on Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is a time for family, friends, food, and fun. While this holiday poses a limited risk to us, the same cannot be said when it comes to our pets.

Follow these Thanksgiving safety tips to help keep your fur baby happy and healthy.

Keep All Food on the Table

Eating turkey or turkey skin can cause a life-threatening condition known as pancreatitis in pets. Fatty foods are quite difficult for pets to digest, and many foods that are healthy for us – onions, raisins, and grapes – are poisonous to our furry family members.

No Sweets Allowed

If you plan to bake Thanksgiving treats, keep them away from your pet. Raw eggs from batter, chocolate, and the artificial sweetener called xylitol can be toxic, even in small amounts.

Bread Dough is a No-No

When a dog or cat ingests raw bread dough, the yeast continues to convert the sugars in the dough to carbon dioxide gas and alcohol. This has the potential to result in a bloated, drunken pet, which can be a life-threatening emergency.

A Feast Made for Fido and Fluffy

Pets can indulge in a Thanksgiving feast with a little careful planning. Offer your furry friend a made-for-pets treat or food puzzle toy while the meal is being served. Just because pets cannot enjoy a traditional Thanksgiving dinner, doesn’t mean they cannot participate in the food festivities.
