Service Highlight: Our Work With K9/Community First Responders

In times of disaster, we all rely on our community first responders, and often these include the Union County Sheriff’s K9 Unit. This amazing team of human and canine officers has come through for our community time and time again. It is such an honor to be the trusted healthcare partner and resource for these dogs and their handlers.

In 2015, WVG and Union County Sheriff established an important partnership to keep the brave K9 officers healthy and well. We proudly provide free annual or semi-annual wellness care for these amazing working dogs, making sure they are in top condition to keep us all safe. Annual wellness exams include:

  • Nose to tail physical exam
  • Weight check and body condition evaluation
  • Vaccinations, if due for boosters
  • Fecal exam (to check for intestinal parasites)
  • Nutritional counseling
  • Age-appropriate blood work to screen for diseases
  • Parasite prevention prescription

In addition, our education department conducts regular training programs for the human officers so that they are prepared to help their K9 partners should an emergency arise in the field. Topics include how to provide emergency first aid for their working dogs, how to deal with injuries, how to bandage any wounds, and how to perform K9 CPR.

We are so appreciative of these working dogs and all they do to keep us safe every day!
